According to The Athletic, Juventus striker Jonathan David is finalizing a one-year loan deal to Atletico Madrid.

The 26-year-old player is expected to fly to the Spanish capital in the coming days to complete the transfer. The Athletic reported on Sunday that the two clubs were in talks regarding the proposed transfer.

Atletico Madrid had previously been interested in a deal for Nicola Jacson, but the striker later joined Aston Villa from Chelsea. Atletico Madrid then shifted their focus to signing David on loan.

An anonymous source said the deal to bring in the 26-year-old Canadian international was aimed at increasing the team’s depth at center forward, rather than replacing an existing striker.

However, Julian Álvarez's situation remains a concern, with Arsenal and Barcelona both maintaining interest. Atlético Madrid has recently made it clear through multiple public statements that they do not wish to sell the Argentine international to the Catalan club.

David's performance was less than ideal when he first joined Juventus last season, scoring only 6 goals in the league. Last summer, he joined Torino on a free transfer from Lille.

Previously, David played for the French club Lille for five years, where he was very successful. He consistently scored double-digit goals in each Ligue 1 season for Lille.

This Canadian international was a key player for Canada at this summer's co-hosted World Cup. He scored 3 goals in 5 appearances, all in the group stage match against Qatar, a 6-0 victory.

His contract with Juventus runs until 2030.

David joined Lille from Belgian side Gent in 2020, a deal that set a club record. In his first season, he scored 19 goals, helping the team win their first Ligue 1 title since 2011. He made 232 appearances for Lille, scoring 109 goals, ranking second on the club's all-time top scorers list.

He scored over 25 goals in each of his last three seasons at Lille, including some crucial goals in the Champions League. Those included the winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Real Madrid and his brace in the 3-1 win against Atletico Madrid in his final season before leaving the club.

In June 2024, Chelsea held talks with Davie's agent team, but ultimately did not proceed with the transfer.
